Privacy

What Ironwood Bible collects when you read, what it keeps, and what it collects only if you agree.

No accounts

This site has no sign-in and no accounts, and it does not ask for your name or your email address.

Cookies this site sets

Ironwood Bible writes these cookies itself, from its own address, and nothing else:

  • ironwood.translation remembers the translation you chose, for a year. It holds a translation code and nothing else.
  • ironwood.analytics remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics, for about 6 months, after which you are asked again.

What the server keeps

The web server keeps an access log. For each request it records the time, the address (IP address) of the device that made it, the page asked for, the response status, and the request headers your browser sends, such as which browser it is. The values of cookie and authorization headers are replaced with the word REDACTED before they are written. The log is used to keep the site running and to look into faults and abuse.

The log is written to a file on the server that is closed at 10 MiB. The five most recent closed files are kept, compressed, and a closed file is deleted at the next rotation after it is 90 days old. How much time the files cover depends on how busy the site is.

To keep the site available, the server also counts requests per IP address over one-minute windows. The counts are held in the server’s memory only, are not written to disk, and are lost when the service restarts.

Analytics

Ironwood Bible would like to measure how the site is used, with Google Analytics 4. It does this only if you accept. Until you do, and if you decline, no Google script is loaded, no request goes to Google, and no analytics cookie is set.

If you accept:

  • Your browser loads a script from Google (googletagmanager.com) and sends Google its measurements, so Google receives your IP address as it would from any request.
  • Google sets two cookies on this site, _ga and one beginning _ga_, which hold a random identifier for your browser. They last 13 months, and the time starts again each time you visit.
  • Each page you open is reported as a page view with its address without any query string, the page title, and the address of the page you came from, also without any query string. Google adds details of your browser and device, such as its language and screen size.
  • Ironwood Bible turns off Google signals and ad personalization, sets no user ID, and sends no other events of its own.
  • Google’s script also records some things on its own, each with the same page address without a query string:
    • when you scroll to the bottom of a page;
    • when you follow a link to another website, or download a file, together with that link’s address or the file’s name;
    • routine events such as time spent on a page.
  • How long Google keeps the data is set in the Analytics property, and it is set to 14 months.

You can change your mind at any time with Analytics choice in the footer of every page. Declining there stops further measurement at once and removes the Google Analytics cookies from this browser; you do not need to reload. Clearing this site’s cookies in your browser has the same effect on the cookies.

How Google handles what it receives is described in Google’s privacy policy.
